Journey Across the Atlantic: The Legacy of Tiano & Nareno
In 1908, two young Italians, Nazzareno Savina (Nareno), 18, and Sebastiano Accorrà (Tiano), 20, left their homeland, where they worked in vine cultivation, and set sail for a new life. Their destination was Argentina, a land full of mystery and promise at the southern tip of the world. This journey marked the beginning of a new chapter, not only for them but also for the burgeoning wine industry in Argentina. The country, welcoming immigrants from all over Europe, was in the midst of a transformation that would shape its modern identity.
From Dream to Reality: Reviving Tradition
Inspired by Tiano and Nareno's passion and dedication, their descendants aimed to honor their legacy by producing a unique and exclusive wine from the same vineyards they once tended. This dream required years of intensive research and meticulous effort, culminating in the first vintage in 2010.
The Mendoza Region: A Premier Wine Destination
Mendoza, the heart of Argentina's wine country, is renowned for its altitude, dry climate, and abundant sunshine, making it one of the top ten wine regions globally. Wine cultivation in Argentina dates back to the early 16th century with Spanish priests and missionaries. However, it wasn't until the late 19th century that French grape varieties, including Malbec, were introduced, predating the phylloxera outbreak that devastated vineyards elsewhere. This historical quirk allowed Argentine vineyards to retain their original character, offering a unique terroir.
The Unique Terroirs of Mendoza
Mendoza's vineyards, situated between 750 and 2300 meters above sea level along the Andes, benefit from an ideal combination of altitude, climate, and soil. With an average altitude of 1100 meters, low annual rainfall, and 300 days of sunshine, the region provides optimal conditions for grape cultivation. The significant temperature difference between day and night extends the ripening period, reducing the need for pesticides and enhancing the grapes' quality. The deep, permeable soil, rich in limestone deposits, is perfect for producing high-quality wines.
Crafting a Legacy: The Birth of Tiano & Nareno
Ariel Savina, grandson of Tiano and Nareno, along with Didier Depond, president of the prestigious Champagne houses Delamotte and Salon, decided to revive the vineyards planted by Ariel's ancestors. This partnership, based on a shared passion for great wines, led to the rebirth of Tiano & Nareno.
From 2005 to 2010, extensive work went into producing the first vintage of Tiano & Nareno in 2010. Ariel, Didier, and renowned winemaker Roberto de la Mota, along with Ariel’s nephew Luis Perocco, meticulously managed the vineyard and cellar work. Their dedication resulted in Travesia 1908, one of the rarest and most sought-after cuvées in South America, with only 6,000 bottles produced annually.
